Abstract:A large body of geochemical evidence suggests that Earth's atmosphere was oxygenated in two major events, the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) and the Neoproterozoic Oxygenation Event (NOE). The first occurred during the Paleoproterozoic likely between 2.45 and 2.2 Ga, resulting in atmospheric oxygen levels above 10 −5 present atmospheric level (PAL) and an oxygenation of the shallow ocean (
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
