Recent years have seen a growth in scholarship on the intertwined histories of climate, science, and European imperialism. Scholarship has focused both on how the material realities of climate shaped colonial enterprises, and on how ideas about climate informed imperial ideologies. Historians have shown how European expansion was justified by its protagonists with theories of racial superiority, which were often closely tied to ideas of climatic determinism. Meanwhile, the colonial spaces established by European powers offered novel “laboratories” where ideas about acclimatization and climatic improvement could be tested on the ground. While historical scholarship has focused on how powerful ideas of climate informed imperial projects, emerging scholarship in environmental history, history of science, and historical geography focuses instead on the material and cognitive practices by which the climates of colonial spaces were made known and dealt with in fields such as forestry, agriculture, and human health. These heretofore rather disparate areas of historical research carry great contemporary relevance for studies of how climates and their changes have been understood, debated, and adapted to in the past. Nesse último caso, merece destaque os trabalhos de Fernand Braudel, Claude Levi-Strauss e Pierre Monbeig que, cada qual com sua temática, produziram outras visões do trópico, considerando, então, o papel da cultura e sua relação com a natureza no processo de desenvolvimento das nações.…”

A partir de infl uências da medicina e de uma concepção de que os trópi-cos representavam a antítese do mundo europeu temperado, o discurso geográfi co de Gourou formaliza uma visão míope sobre o mundo tropical e seus habitantes. Across the colonial world, indigenous people were subjected to extensive resettlement projects that removed them from the lands of their ancestors, separating them from their economic foundations, disrupting their resource security and severing their cultural heritage. Many geographical studies have explored the ways in which indigenous communities, faced with resettlement, transgressed colonial space to express their resistance to the authority of colonial agents. This article examines the resistance of Zimbabwe's Shona population to colonial resettlement between the late 1800s and independence in 1980. But rather than focusing on landscapes of power or the mobility of indigenous people to plot politicised resistance to resettlement, I examine the way in which the musical landscapes of the Shona enabled them to resist the destructive cultural implications of resettlement. Framed within geographies of colonialism, resettlement and music, this article sets out the significance of the ancestral lands for the Shona before uncovering the way in which music enabled them to carry those lands with them to the resettlement areas, thereby preserving both culture and identity that could later be reinstated to sustain cultural nationalism during the struggle for independence.
