Construction and validation of a nomogram for predicting survival in elderly patients with cardiac surgery

Abstract: BackgroundIn recent years, the number of elderly patients undergoing cardiac surgery has rapidly increased and is associated with poor outcomes. However, there is still a lack of adequate models for predicting the risk of death after cardiac surgery in elderly patients. This study sought to identify independent risk factors for 1-year all-cause mortality in elderly patients after cardiac surgery and to develop a predictive model.MethodsA total of 3,752 elderly patients with cardiac surgery were enrolled from t… Show more

“…Consequently, aortic surgery further contributes to the risk of developing AKI. Cardiac surgery with CPB is widely acknowledged for its prolonged duration and substantial trauma, frequently resulting in postoperative organ dysfunction in patients ( 27 ). Therefore, in our study, surgery time was chosen for multivariate logistic regression.…”

“…However, cardiac surgery in the elderly poses increased complications due to factors such as age, surgical trauma, and others. Studies have highlighted higher incidences of acute renal impairment 4 , multiple organ failure 5 , and cognitive dysfunction 6 , in the elderly post-cardiac surgery. Early identi cation of prognostically relevant risk factors is imperative.…”

“…In comparison to other cardiac procedures, acute kidney injury (AKI), a prevalent postoperative complication especially after aortic surgery, carries a risk of up to 71.94% (8). Cardiac surgery-associated AKI (CSA-AKI) has a complicated pathogenesis involving IRI, inflammatory response, metabolic imbalance, oxidative stress, and other factors (9)(10)(11)(12). Since there is presently no efficient treatment for CSA-AKI, meaningful prognostic predictors could be able to assist clinicians in making an early diagnosis and stratifying patients by the most effective and timely intervention.…”
