Construction Logistics in a City Development Setting

Abstract: With the current urbanization trend, there is an increased need for city development, i.e. to build apartment buildings, hospitals, schools and infrastructure in cities and urban areas to meet the rising demands. At the same time, land is increasingly seen as a finite resource. This has led to the regeneration of decommissioned industrial-use land for development purposes. This means that multiple individual construction projects are being built in the same or nearby areas during the same time-period. However,… Show more

“…Although finished construction projects positively correlate with economically viable and growing cities in the long-term (Janné, 2020), the environmental impact of its logistics during the works cannot be ignored (Babak, 2017;Sezer & Fredriksson, 2021;van Lier & Macharis, 2016). With regards to off-site construction logistics (i.e.…”

“…Construction logistics involve the preparation, management, coordination, and control of product flow from raw material processing to final utilisation in the finished project and reverse logistics of waste removal and disposal (Agapiou et al, 1998;. The components of construction logistics are (Jang et al, 2003;Sobotka et al, 2005;Ying et al, 2018;Janné, 2020):--Whole-project Logistics Sees the building site through the lens of a production system. It is a member of many logistics chains, executing complex processes within the constraints of budget, space, and time.…”

“…-On-site Logistics On-site material flow coordination internal to the construction site. and organisation (inter-organisational relationships), transportation, and site activities (Janné, 2020). Activities within these domains typically perform the roles of establishing clear SC -construction site interfaces, possible integration of the construction site with the SC, increasing efficiencies of the SC and site processes/activities, local stakeholder coordination, and value addition.…”

“…checkpoints) (Dubois et al , 2019). However, these CLSs are still a rare phenomenon in the daily construction work (Ekeskär and Rudberg, 2016), especially when proposed as joint setups, and research has focus on finding acceptance (Hedborg Bengtsson et al , 2018) for them as a concept and when to use them (Janné, 2020). This is in line with how Lambert and Cooper (2000) describe SCM as consisting of a set of management tools (described above).…”
