Construction Safety Management Climate in Kolkata, India

Abstract: A literature survey has revealed that workers in construction sites are subjected to hazardous conditions all over the world and more so in developing countries. Kolkata, India is no exception. Three surveys namely workers' safety perceptions, managers' safety practices and cultural attitudes towards safety for both the workers and the managers have been conducted in four construction sites in and around Kolkata. The responses have been studied with statistical techniques like factor analysis, correlations and… Show more

“…Guha used factor analysis, multiple regression, and other methods to analyze the safety management problems of existing construction organizations in Kolkata, India. The study found that strengthening the safety training of managers has an important impact on improving the safety awareness of managers and workers [26]. Liu et al, based on the K-means mean value of the urban rail transit construction safety accident clustering analysis of the main process, found that the bad complex geological conditions of the construction organization are the dominant safety factors [27].…”

“…Haefeli et al [20] noted that health and safety errors could affect a company's financial success through higher-level factors such customer and client expectations, employee morale, productivity, efficiency, and service delivery. Guha [21] argues that strict safety regulations in developing nations may be unreasonable and that stakeholders cannot absorb the safety cost for economic survival if the true cost of accident is too low. Safety investment cannot be absolute, and a logical safety cost judgment is needed.…”

“…The following review studies the calculation and influencing factors of SMC. Guha et al (2013) stated that most of the construction industry's SMCs are set lower than the actual budget required. They also stated that since the budget for safety management is limited, SMCs should be appropriated based on reasonable standards [25].…”
