Consumer confidence in the safety of milk and infant milk formula in China

Abstract: A series of food safety incidents related to domestically produced dairy in China harmed consumer confidence and caused a dramatic decrease in dairy consumption from 2008 to 2010. Compared with previous studies that mainly assessed consumer confidence in food or dairy in general, this study focused on 2 specific dairy products, milk and infant milk formula (IMF). “…The interviewees preferred to purchase foreign brands from large supermarkets, online or rely on family and friends who travelled abroad to purchase infant formula. Chinese consumers still lack confidence in domestically produced infant formulas and concerned parents in China often sourced for foreign-produced infant formula (El Benni et al, 2019;Hanser & Li, 2015;Li, Sijtsema, Kornelis, Liu, & Li, 2019a;2019b). Chinese consumers preferred imported milk powder from abroad such as United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia and Switzerland compared to domestic milk powder.…”

“…Food fraud has become a widely acknowledged concern, not only within the food supply chain, but also more widespread, for instance, by consumers. Recent studies on Chinese consumers' preferences showed that Chinese consumers are concerned about the risk of domestic milk products and, especially, infant milk formula [8] and therefore prefer to buy "foreign milk powder" instead of domestic products [9]. Melamine is not the only milk adulterant.…”
