Consumer preferences for riding lessons in Finland, Sweden and Latvia

Abstract: Services by equine sector offer a new livelihood for farms around cities, but studies focusing on the demand for these services are limited. Knowledge of the clients' preferences enables systematic development of the riding services. We examined a riding lesson choice, and attributes affecting it, in Finland, Sweden and Latvia using a choice experiment method. The latent class model revealed three distinctive consumer groups in each country: one with low interest in lessons, one with recreational focus and one… Show more

“…Moreover, in a latent class model, the number of class s can be determined using various statistical tests. Such tests include the Akaike information criterion (AIC), Akaike information criterion three (AIC-3) and the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) (Campbell et al, 2011;Garrod et al, 2012;Tibesigwa et al, 2020;Tienhaara et al, 2020) where the model with the minimum information criteria value is preferred. The number of classes can also be determined by reflecting on the study's aims,…”

“…The LCM shows superiority in determining the heterogeneity of respondents' preferences in different classes (Tibesigwa et al, 2020;Tienhaara et al, 2020;Tsai & Chen, 2019). Thus, this study applies the CE method to consider preferences heterogeneity on tourist facility attributes using LCM at a recreational site.…”

“…Choice experiments have been successfully applied in other tourism contexts, such as, preferences for hotel room attributes (Masiero et al , 2015), hotel choice (Román and Martín, 2016), horse riding lessons (Tienhaara et al , 2017), trail running (Ribet and Brander, 2020), wildlife watching (Kubo and Shoji, 2016) and glamping attributes (Lyu et al , 2020), among others. They represent an interesting method for gathering the data set required to estimate discrete choice models.…”
