Contact allergy to phenoplastics

Abstract: The phenoplastic in the ICDRG series is ptertiary butylphenol-formaldehyde. This is often used in glues and is then often not completely hardened to an insoluble network. However, there are many other phenols and aldehydes used in phenoplastics. Furthermore, the processing procedure provides different types. Phenols commonly used are phenol, cresols, xylenol, resorcinol, alkylphenols (p-tert. butyl-, diisoethyl-, cardanol, etc.), bisphenol A, pphenylphenol, etc. Aldehydes used are mainly formaldehyde and fur… Show more

“…The UV-A was dosed according to the depth of erythemal response on day 2 at the UV-A provocation site (ie, 5.00 J/cm 2 was used if mild erythema was seen; 2.50 J/cm 2 , if moderate erythema was seen; and 0.50-1.00 J/cm 2 , if severe erythema was seen). Readings were made at 24 and 48 hours after UV administration (days 3 and 4) to examine for a crescendo response, using the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group (ICDRG) grading (range, nil to +++, indicative of more intense contact reaction) …”

“…Patch testing was performed with serial dilutions of Ni sulphate at 8 sites on the upper back avoiding the midline, according to the recommendations of the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group ( 9 ). To minimize the occurrence of other skin reactions, each site was located at least 7.5 cm distant from each other, and the test was performed at least 2 weeks after the preliminary diagnostic patch test reaction was no longer visible.…”
