“…aeruginosa -infected hCF monolayers completely: interestingly, this class of antibiotics has been reported to show efficacy against multidrug-resistant P . aeruginosa (MDR-P) ( Poole, 2011 ), but has a high incidence of side effects, especially contact dermatitis, which limits its use in intensive antibiotic eye drop therapy ( Jiaravuthisan and DeKoven, 2008 ; Poole, 2011 ). CXM treatment showed high antimicrobial activity against extracellular P. aeruginosa growth, but failed to clear intracellular infection.…”

“…15,26,27 To date, reports of allergies to polymyxin B sulfate have been rare, but do exist. 16,17 In addition to the risk of causing allergic contact dermatitis, unnecessary use of antibiotics has led to an increase in drug resistance. It has been estimated that physicians in the United States overprescribe antibiotics by 50%, 1 creating a selection pressure for drug-resistant strains to survive and thrive.…”

“…15 Although rates of allergies to polymyxin B sulfate appear to be low, there have been published case reports of allergic contact dermatitis caused by polymyxin B sulfate. 16,17 In a study of 922 subjects with 1249 dermatologic surgery wounds, 4 patients (0.9%) whose wounds were treated with bacitracin developed allergic contact dermatitis after 4 weeks versus no patients whose wounds were treated with white petrolatum. 13 More important than the risk of allergic contact dermatitis is the fact that overuse of antibiotics has led to an increase in antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Propionibacterium acnes.…”
