ConText: Contactless Sensors For Body Monitoring Incorporated In Textiles

Abstract: The aim of the ConText project is to develop a vest with integrated sensors and electronics for constant monitoring of muscle activity. The vest measures muscle activity in order to derive the psychological stress level of a person. The ConText project proposes to develop a sensor technology, which requires no direct contact with the body, and to achieve a high level of integration of the sensors and electronics into textile. The realisation of contactless EMG sensors, textile integration of the sensors and th… Show more

“…Although the system was able to measure the bioelectrical signal, but the attenuation of the ECG signals and motion artefacts greatly reduced the signal resolution. Under the European Union (EU) ConText program, Linz et al (2007) developed the contactless electromyography (EMG) sensors that were embroidered into a textile material for a wearable sensing application [12,13,14]. The sensor’s coupling plate was conductive yarn embroidered onto the textile material.…”

“…In the case where constant contact with the skin is not possible, Langereis et al (2007) describe the work using contactless electrodes for EMG. Such electrodes do not require electrical contact with the skin as they detect an electric displacement current by coupling capacitatively to the body.…”

“…Wearable systems (Paradiso et al 2005;Pacelli et al 2006;Langereis et al 2007;Matthews et al 2007;Pandian et al 2008;Figueiredo et al 2010;Coyle et al 2010;Curone et al 2010;Pantelopoulos and Bourbakis 2010a;López et al 2010;Taraldsen et al 2011) have also been designed to measure a user's biological signals. One such approach has been Matthews et al (2007) ''Physiological Sensor Suite (PSS)'', which gathers electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyogram (EMG), electrooculogram (EOG) and through-hair electroencephalogram (EEG) data.…”
