Context in Landscape Planning: Improving Conservation Outcomes by Identifying Social Values for a Flagship Species

Abstract: Sustainable conservation planning depends on understanding local context including the way social values impact a landscape. Flamingos are used here as a flagship species to focus the social values of a broad range of people living in and working in the Camargue in France. A survey questionnaire (n = 87) was used to identify the range of ways in which people value the landscape and their perception of effectiveness of flamingo management strategies. Survey analysis was conducted through a multi-method approach… Show more

“…By integrating traditional knowledge with scientific data, the research provides a more comprehensive understanding of historical ecosystem conditions, aiding conservation and fisheries management. Ernoul, L. et al [58] explore the role of social values in landscape planning for a flagship species. Using several case studies, the research highlights the importance of considering cultural and ethical values when designing conservation strategies for flagship species, ultimately leading to improved conservation outcomes.…”

“…First of all, the actual setting area of the sculpture is integrated for hierarchical control, and the public space is also divided into primary and secondary. Therefore, the model matrix needs to follow this principle in the construction process, design a cross hierarchical control structure, set a core or planning key position in the model matrix, and take this as the axis to extend to both sides, form two controllable two-way balance spaces [5]. The layout is divided and controlled at a hierarchical level, and the weight coefficient of cross-planning is calculated, as shown in Formula 2.2:…”

“…The selection of flagship species appears to be based purely on their marketing value, with no correlation to their endangerment status or their status and value in the ecosystem [12,13]. For flagship species to better act as 'ambassadors' [14], many scientists have adjusted the selection methods and criteria for flagship species: flagship species should not only have strong spiritual, popular aesthetic, or social and cultural connotations based on the economic, cultural, historical, and social values of different species in different countries or regions [15], but they should also have broader ecological and economic conservation value [16]. The use of flagship species with charisma and appeal as an important conservation tool to mobilize positive emotions and attitudes linked to interest in conservation action can help to promote and control the management of large areas of habitat and protect many other lesser-known species [17,18].…”
