Context Mining of Sedentary Behaviour for Promoting Self-Awareness Using a Smartphone

Abstract: Sedentary behaviour is increasing due to societal changes and is related to prolonged periods of sitting. There is sufficient evidence proving that sedentary behaviour has a negative impact on people’s health and wellness. This paper presents our research findings on how to mine the temporal contexts of sedentary behaviour by utilizing the on-board sensors of a smartphone. We use the accelerometer sensor of the smartphone to recognize user situations (i.e., still or active). If our model confirms that the user… Show more

“…Detecting the activity a user is performing is as important as understanding the context around such activity. In “Context Mining of Sedentary Behaviour for Promoting Self-Awareness Using a Smartphone” [ 9 ], the authors exploit sensors embedded into regular smartphones to mine the temporal context of passive behaviors. The proposed system uses the inertial sensors to first differentiate between active or still; if the person is categorized into the latter, then environmental audio is captured and processed to identify the specific context.…”

“…The emerging approach is also the use of smartphones equipped with accelerometers and information about micro-context. Fahim et al in [ 13 ] investigated a user-centric smartphone-based approach to recognize the context of sedentary behavior based on the onboard accelerometers and audio sensors of the smartphone. Authors showed that developed application is capable of reducing sedentary behavior.…”
