“…Benthonic forms can be used for a range of palaeoenvironmental studies, although in most published studies bathymetry is always the most important aspect (Montenat et al 1976;Wright 1978;Troelstra et al 1980;Van der Zwaan and Den Hartog Jager 1983;Murray 1991;Fortuin et al 1995). In order to calculate the changing palaeobathymetry of the Sorbas Basin during deposition of the Abad Member, the main parameters used in other established palaeobathymetric studies were identi®ed.…”

“…The most important foraminiferal palaeobathymetric studies on the Abad Member are: Vo Èlk (1967), Montenat et al (1976), Cita et al (1980) and Carbonnel (1990), who indicated deposition at upper bathyal depths (> 180 m); and Fortuin et al (1995) who estimated deposition at upper±middle bathyal depths (180±1300 m). However, these studies were based upon just a few samples taken from scattered localities, and as such do not give an adequate representation of the depositional history of the Abad Member across the basin.…”

“…This event has frequently been recognised both in the Mediterranean (Zachariasse, 1975;Montenat et al, 1976;Civis et al, 1979;Iaccarino, 1985;Van de Poel, 1991;Sierro et al, 1993Sierro et al, , 1997Gautier et al, 1994;Sprovieri et al, 1996a,b) and in the Atlantic (Feinberg and Lorenz, 1970;Bossio et al, 1976;Cita and Ryan, 1978;Salvatorini and Cita, 1979;Sierro, 1984Sierro, , 1985Sierro et al, 1993;Hodell et al, 1989;Benson et al, 1991;Zhang and Scott 1996). Iaccarino (1985) used this event to de®ne the base of the non-distinctive zone in the Mediterranean.…”
