Continuous blood pressure measurement using the pulse transit time: Comparison to intra-arterial measurement

Abstract: Continuous blood pressure (BP) measurement allows the investigation of transient changes in BP and thus may give insights into mechanisms of BP control. We validated a continuous, non-invasive BP measurement based on the pulse transit time (PTT), i.e., BP(PTT), by comparing it with the intra-arterial BP (BP(i.a.)) measurement. Twelve subjects (five females and seven males) were included. BP(i.a.) was obtained from the radial artery using a system from ReCor Medical. Systolic and diastolic BP were calculated us… Show more

“…Notably, a direct method based on the relationship between BP and the pulse wave velocity (PWV) can be used to determine BP noninvasively. Good correlations have been found between cardiovascular parameters and BP assessed using the pulse transit time (PTT) in patients with OSA 21 , and BP measured using the PTT is comparable with that assessed by reference methods [22][23][24][25] .…”

“…So accurate waveform is essential to the quantitative analysis of the cardiovascular parameters. In addition, pulse transit time (PTT) has been demonstrated as one of the potential parameters for noninvasive estimation of the arterial viscoelastic properties and blood pressure, which could be obtained by the time interval between the characteristic points of electrocardiograph (ECG) and peripheral pressure pulse and takes only about 200 ms . So, even a small distortions in the pulse wave will affect the accuracy of PTT.…”
