Continuous-Wave THz Imaging for Biomedical Samples

Abstract: In the past few decades, the applications of terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and imaging technology have seen significant developments in the fields of biology, medical diagnosis, food safety, and nondestructive testing. Label-free diagnosis of malignant tumours has been obtained and also achieved significant development in THz biomedical imaging. This review mainly presents the research status and prospects of several common continuous-wave (CW) THz medical imaging systems and applications of THz medical imaging… Show more

“…The upper and lower wings of a butterfly reflect THz waves at f 1 and f 2 , respectively, so their spectral responses, i.e., colors, are different. To obtain the spectral information of the object, we used a continuous wave THz source 40 . The two THz beams with frequencies of f 1 and f 2 incident on the SLM subsequently can be spatially encoded by the SLM.…”

“…During the years, THz spectroscopy proved to be a very useful and successful tool for the investigation of many processes in pharmaceuticals, biology, and bio-medicine, since it probes low frequency vibrational modes [126][127][128][129]. These vibrations define large scale conformational changes occurring along the torsional degrees of freedom in complex biopolymers [130][131][132].…”

“…The CW THz transmission imaging system is more suitable to map thin tissue samples with weak absorption of THz radiation. As shown in Figure 3 , the leaf sample is placed at the focal position of the incident beam and scanned pixel by pixel by moving it along the X–Y plane [ 60 ]. It is suitable for verifying the effectiveness of the CW THz transmission imaging system as the leaf can be considered as a 2D thin sample.…”
