We consider the possible existence of a SM-neutral and light dark sector coupled to the visible sector through irrelevant portal interactions. Scenarios of this kind are motivated by dark matter and arise in various extensions of the Standard Model. We characterize the dark dynamics in terms of one ultraviolet scale Λuv, at which the exchange of heavy mediator fields generates the portal operators, and by one infrared scale ΛIR, setting the mass gap. At energies ΛIR « E « Λuv the dark sector behaves like a conformal field theory and its phenomenology can be studied model independently. We derive the constraints set on this scenario by high- and low-energy laboratory experiments and by astrophysical observations. Our results are conservative and serve as a minimum requirement that must be fulfilled by the broad class of models satisfying our assumptions, of which we give several examples. The experimental constraints are derived in a manner consistent with the validity of the effective field theory used to define the portal interactions. We find that high-energy colliders give the strongest bounds and exclude UV scales up to a few TeV, but only in specific ranges of the IR scale. The picture emerging from current searches can be taken as a starting point to design a future experimental strategy with broader sensitivity.

The basic principle of naturalness has driven the majority of the LHC program, but so far all searches for new physics beyond the SM have come up empty. On the other hand, existing measurements of SM processes contain interesting anomalies, which allow for the possibility of new physics with mass scales very close to the Electroweak Scale. In this paper we show that SUSY could have stops with masses O(200) GeV based on an anomaly in the W + W − cross section, measured by both ATLAS and CMS at 7 and 8 TeV. In particular we show that there are several different classes of stop driven scenarios that not only evade all direct searches, but improve the agreement with the data in the SM measurement of the W + W − cross section.

Dark sectors with purely gravitational couplings to the Standard Model are unavoidably populated from the SM plasma by graviton exchange, and naturally provide dark matter candidates. We examine the production in the relativistic regime where the dark sector is approximately scale invariant, providing general analytical formulas that depend solely on the central charge of the dark sector. We then assess the relevance of interactions that can lead to a variety of phenomena including thermalisation, non-perturbative mass gaps, out-of-equilibrium phase transitions and cannibalism in the dark sector. As an illustrative example we consider the dark glueball scenario in this light and show it to be a viable dark matter candidate due to the suppression of gravitational production. We go on to extend these results to strongly coupled CFTs and their holographic duals at large-N with the dark dilaton as the dark matter candidate.
