Contour maps for developing optimal toolpath and workpiece setup in hexapod machine tools by considering the kinematics nonlinearity

Abstract: Contrary to the conventional serial kinematics machine tools, the parallel kinematics machine tools exhibit nonlinear behavior which is a major source of the machining error. This causes even a linearly programmed path to be traversed along a nonlinear path. The resulting error, known here as the kinematic error, should be critically considered during the toolpath planning. The estimation of the maximum kinematic error using the concept of median osculating circle is introduced in this article. The proposed fo… Show more

“…In each case, the digital dial indicators recorded the deviation from path data in real time as traveling along specified path on gauge block surface. Experiments were conducted at various path lengths with constant feed rate, since according to [25] the input desired feed rate has no effect on motion error of parallel mechanisms.…”

“…Based on a conducted literature review [25], [26], [27], [28], [29], [30] a method is proposed for determining the optimal route of cutters of one size when moving among one group of sections subject to machining. The method is implemented in two stages:  at the first stage, an option for minimizing the idle moves of the tool when changing the machined section is sought.…”
