Contraction of a Polyelectrolyte upon Dilution. Light-Scattering Studies on a Polycation in Saltless Water−Acetone Mixtures

Abstract: A superhigh-molar-mass polyelectrolyte, poly(methacryloylethyl trimethylammonium methyl sulfate) (PMETMMS), with molar mass 26 × 10 6 has been studied by viscosity and light scattering in saltless water-acetone mixtures of various compositions. PMETMMS is known to collapse on addition of acetone into an aqueous solution. It has been shown that the collapse of the polyelectrolyte chains may be induced also by dilution of the polymer solutions, leaving the solvent composition constant. The scattered light intens… Show more

“…Instead of varying the polymer, one could vary the solvent, e.g., by decreasing solvent quality through addition to water of miscible bad solvent, like acetone. SAX(N)S showed the coil to globule transition in dilute regime. , In the semidilute regime, in polar organic solvent of poor quality, acetonitrile, atactic poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethylammonium 1,1,2,3,3,-pentacyanopropenide] ‘MPCP’ chains give two regimes with two scaling exponents α being −1/2 and −1/7 in qualitative agreement with the pearl necklace model …”

“…[117,118,121] Dimensional studies have been performed using various polyelectrolytes, such as poly-(styrene sulfonate) [117,118,121] and other ion-containing polymers. [120,122,123] [ 109] The collapse kinetics of strongly charged polyelectrolytes in poor solvents has been investigated by Langevin simulation and scaling arguments. [124] The role of the counterion, valency, solvent quality, and the shape of the counterions on the dynamics of collapse were studied in this contribution.…”

“…20 For another polymer, it was showed by using addition of miscible bad (or marginal) solvent to water, acetone, that the polyelectrolyte chain undergoes a complete coil to globule collapse transition. 21,22 A third system dealt with anionic chains neutralized by specifically interacting alkaline earth cations, also showing a pearlstring-like conformation. 23,24 In the semi-dilute regime where many chains are interpenetrated with each others, in the case of hydrophilic polyelectrolyte, the chain is a random walk of correlation blobs, 1,2 each blob is an extended configuration of electrostatic blobs, and the correlation length ξ i.e.…”
