Contrast and transferability of parameters of lumped water balance models in the Segura River Basin (Spain)

Abstract: Knowing the water resources in a river basin is a key aspect to appropriate water planning, and they can be estimated by lumped water balance models. The possibility to transfer the calibrated parameters of a contrasted model to non‐gauged ones improves this knowledge with no need for direct measurements. This work studies the transferability of the parameters of the lumped models in five catchments in the southeast of Spain, testing the influence of the snow and the effect of serial autocorrelation in the goo… Show more

“…The ABCD model is a monthly hydrological model with four parameters (a, b, c, and d) developed by Thomas Jr. [50], which uses precipitation and potential evapotranspiration to simulate actual evapotranspiration, surface/subsurface runoff, and storage changes [51]. It has been widely applied as a hydro-climatologic model to investigate the response of basins to climate change and performs well in humid or arid regions [52,53]. Considering that summer and autumn snowmelt in the LRB impact the regional water cycle, the snowmelt module proposed by Xu et al [54] was embedded into the primary ABCD model.…”

“…The modified hydrological model was applied to a study site in the headwaters of the Segura River Basin District (southeast of Spain) (Perni et al ., ), which includes the catchments of the Segura and the Mundo Rivers (Pellicer‐Martínez and Martínez‐Paz, ), the most important features of which are shown in Table .…”

“…Vandewiele and Xu [17] also found that the ABCD model compares favorably with other more recent monthly water balance models in Belgium. Currently, the ABCD model has been found to have the best performance in the Segura River basin in southern Spain [97]. The GR2M model is widely used in France in all of its different versions [98].…”
