Background: Understanding the magnitude of human exposure to mosquito biting is fundamental to reduce pathogen transmission. Here we report on a study quantifying the levels of mosquitoes attacking humans throughout the night in a rural area of Southern Mozambique. Methods: Surveys were carried out in Massavasse village, southern Mozambique. The abundance and composition of host-seeking mosquito communities at night were assessed by human-landing catches (HLC) at one-hour intervals. Periods when people were located predominantly outdoors or indoors were used to estimate the amount of residents’ exposure to mosquito bites in either location, to explore the potential impact a bed net could have had in reducing biting by each vector species. Results: A total of 69,758 host-seeking female mosquitoes comprising 23 species in four genera were collected. The exposure to biting by virtually all vector species was consistently high outdoors, typically at early evening and morning, with exception of An. gambiae s.l which was likely of biting a person with nearly same intensity indoors and outdoors throughout the night. Bed nets use could have reduced biting by An. gambiae s.l (dominated by An. arabiensis), Ma. africana, Ma. uniformis, Cx. pipiens, Cx. antennatus, and Cx. poicilipes by 53%, 47%, 46%, 38%, 31%, and 28% respectively, compared to non-users. Conversely, a bed net user would have had little protection against An. pharoensis, An. ziemanni, An. tenebrosus, and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus biting exposures. Conclusions: This study showed that Massavasse residents were exposed to high levels of outdoor biting by malaria and arbovirus vectors that abound in the village. The findings help to identify entomological drivers of persistent malaria transmission in Mozambique and identify a wide range of arbovirus vectors nocturnally active in rural areas, many with outbreak potential. The study highlights the need for a surveillance system for monitoring arboviral diseases vectors in Mozambique.

Résumé Pendant cinq ans, à partir de 1953, un grand programme d'aspersions pariétales intradomiciliaires s'est déroulé dans la zone pilote de Bobo-Dioulasso avec du DDT ou de la dieldrine (DLN) avec une évaluation conceptuellement entomologique et parasitologique [ 18 ]. Par rapport à la zone témoin, le DDT a induit une réduction d'environ 95% et 67% du taux de piqûres d' Anopheles gambiae , respectivement à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur des maisons. Mais du fait de son action irritante, le DDT a augmenté de cinq fois le coefficient d'exophagie de ce vecteur. La DLN n'a eu aucun impact sur le taux de piqûres d' An. gambiae aussi bien à l'intérieur qu'à l'extérieur, vu la résistance de l'espèce anophélienne à cet insecticide. L'indice sporozoïtique d' An. gambiae a été réduit de 96% dans les zones traitées au DDT et de 70% dans le secteur traité à la DLN. Le DDT a réduit de 98% et de 91% le taux de piqûres d'Anopheles funestus, respectivement dans les maisons traitées et à l'extérieur. Avec la DLN, ces réductions ont été respectivement de 98% et 97%. L'indice sporozoïtique d' An. funestus a été réduit de 95% dans les zones traitées au DDT. La lutte antivectorielle a permis de réduire la transmission due à An. gambiae et An. funestus de quelques 99,8% dans les villages traités au DDT par rapport aux villages témoins. La DLN a permis de réduire de 99,9% la transmission due à An. funestus , mais quasiment pas celle due à An. gambiae . La lutte antivectorielle basée sur les aspersions intradomiciliaires de DDT ou de DLN a permis de réduire de 99,9% la transmission des Plasmodium humains assurée par les deux vecteurs majeurs, An. gambiae et An. funestus dans les villages de la zone pilote. Chez les enfants de 2–9 ans l'indice splénique a été de 84,3% (n= 979) en zone témoin et 44,4% (n = 8920) en zones traitées (différence: -47,3%), la prévalence plasmodiale a été de 60,6% (n = 946) en zone témoin et 38,0% (n = 7242) en zones traitées (différence: – 37%) mais les indices gamétocytiques sont restés aux mêmes niveaux (3,28%, n = 946 en zone témoin et 3,04%, n = 7242 en zones traitées) indiquant le maintien du « réservoir de virus » et des possibilités de transmission. Par rapport à la zone témoin, « l'indice de contamination nouvelle » a été significativement moindre chez les nourrissons de 0-3 mois et de 4 à 6 mois dans les villages traités au DDT mais pas chez les nourrissons 7 à 12 mois démontrant que la lutte antivectorielle avait eu une certaine efficacité dans la prévention de l'infection plasmodiale mais « tous les nouveau-nés étaient infectés dans l'année », donc la transmission de P. falciparum n'avait pas été complètement stoppée. Beginning about 80 years ago, the recognition of morphological varieties of mosquitoes was gradually replaced by the recognition of subspecies. As an examination of revisionary and detailed taxonomic studies of mosquitoes clearly shows, subspecies are untenable concepts which have been synonymized with nominotypical forms or recognized as distinct species. Thus, from our perspective, subspecies is not a functional or practical taxonomic rank. Consequently, in this study we critically assessed the taxonomic status of the 120 nominal taxa distinguished as subspecies before now to determine whether they should be recognized as separate species or synonymous names. As a result, 96 subspecies are formally elevated to specific rank, 22 are relegated to synonymy with nominotypical forms, one is considered a nomen dubium, one a species inquirenda and the names of four nominal species regarded as synonyms are revalidated. The subspecies and their new status are listed in a conspectus. The revalidated species include Anopheles argentinus (Brèthes, 1912), from synonymy with An. pseudopunctipennis Theobald, 1901c; An. peruvianus Tamayo, 1907, from synonymy with An. pseudopunctipennis as nomen dubium; Culex major Edwards, 1935, from synonymy with Cx. annulioris consimilis Newstead, 1907; and Trichoprosopon trichorryes (Dyar & Knab, 1907), from synonymy with Tr. compressum Lutz, 1905. Additionally, the type locality of Anopheles sergentii Theobald, 1907 is restricted to El Outaya, Biskra Province, Algeria. A complete list of species to be retained, added to or removed from the Encyclopedia of Life, with a few corrections, is provided.
