Abstract. Natural fluctuations in river flow are central to the ecosystem productivity of basins, yet significant alterations in daily flows pose threats to the integrity of the hydrological, ecological, and agricultural systems. In the dammed Mekong River, the attribution of these large daily flow changes to upstream regions remains mechanistically unexamined, a factor blamed on challenges in estimating the time required for large daily shifts in upstream river flow to impact the downstream regions. Here, we address this by integrating a newly developed sub-basin modeling framework that incorporates 3D hydrodynamic, response time, and hydrological models. This integration allows us to estimate the time required between two hydrological stations and to distinguish the contribution of sub-basins and upstream regions to large daily river flow alterations. Findings revealed a power correlation between river discharge and the required time to reach downstream stations. Significant fluctuations in the river's daily flow were evident before the advent of the era of human activities, i.e., before 1992. This phenomenon persisted throughout subsequent periods, including the growth period from 1992 to 2009 and the mega-dam period spanning from 2010 to 2020, with minimal variation in the frequency of events. Sub-basins were found to significantly contribute to mainstream discharge- a contribution which led to a significant contribution of sub-basins into mainstream daily large river flow shifts. The outcomes and model derived from the sub-basin approach hold significant potential for managing river fluctuations and have broader applicability beyond the specific basin studied.

In conservative manner, water managers utilize ground station dataset for hydrology analysis. Due to spatially sparse and unreliable precipitation gauges, many have shifted to the application of remote sensing products or satellite-based precipitation products (SBPPs). One of few notable SBPPs is the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM), which has shown excellent performances. Despite its significant progress, systematic biases are inevitable in the process of recording precipitation. Consequently, a simple yet effective correction process is necessary to be carried out prior to SBPPs’ wide applications. This study proposes a non-complex transformation using Monte Carlo-Cross Validation (MCCV) for its function parameterization. The rainfall products in focus are the monthly GPM 3IMERGDF V06 in the Upper Bengawan Solo Basin, in Central Java. Evaluation using several statistical functions demonstrate that the GPM IMERG is capable in capturing the monthly rainfall, supporting by the mean correlation of 0,76. After the correction process, the GPM IMERG slightly improves its performance, indicated by the reduced error of approximately 16%. This correction procedure also allows for correction of the monthly rainfall overestimation, particularly those exceeding 600 mm/month.

In arid regions with scarce water resources, lakes play an extremely vital role in maintaining the ecological environment. Therefore, the Chinese government has launched an ecological water conveyance project in the Tarim River basin in Xinjiang with the aim of restoring the ecological environment of the area. In previous studies, there was no complete evaluation system used to quantify changes in the ecological environment of arid regions after ecological water conveyance. In this paper, Lake Taitema was selected as the study area, which is both a terminal lake in the Tarim River basin and an object of the ecological water conveyance project. This study utilized Landsat TM/OLI satellite remote sensing images and MODIS datasets to build a remote sensing ecological index model and systematically evaluated the changes in the ecological environment and land use types in the Taitema Lake area. A structural equation model was constructed to analyze the correlation between the area of Taitema Lake and its driving factors. The results show that over the selected 20 years, the proportion of pixels with an upward trend (Zc > 0) of the RSEI was 56.5%, while the proportion of pixels with a downward trend (Zc < 0) of the RSEI was 43.5%. The area proportion of regions with poor ecological environment quality decreased by about 40%, and the area proportions of regions with moderate, good, and excellent ecological environment quality increased by 29.7%, 10%, and 0.6%, respectively. By comparing the land use data from 2000 and 2020, the proportion of grassland increased by 6%, the proportion of water area increased by 4.4%, and the proportion of unused land decreased by 9.6%. In summary, after the implementation of the ecological water conveyance project, the ecological environment quality of the Lake Taitema area gradually improved, and ecological water conveyance was the main driving factor of the area change in Lake Taitema.
