This study aims to analyze the contributions of the doctoral dissertations completed in the disciplines of economy, law, psychology, political science, and international relations to the literature and practice through the citations to the articles extracted from these dissertations using bibliometric analysis. These disciplines were included in the present study as they were determined as the priority ones in the training of the human resources by the Turkish Council of Higher Education (CoHE). 88 dissertations were reached in the National Thesis Center database of CoHE in 2018 and subjected to document analysis. The published scientific studies based on these dissertations were primarily searched within authors’ websites, CoHE Academic, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Education Resources Information Center, ResearchGate and Google Scholar. No data could be found for 61 dissertations out of 88 ones. The citations to the articles derived from 17 dissertations, which were searched in Google Scholar, ResearchGate, SCOPUS, SOBIAD and Web of Science databases were bibliometrically analyzed. Only 9 dissertations were cited. While the primary data were used in the dissertations completed in the discipline of psychology, the secondary data were mostly used in the other dissertations. These results indicate that the contribution of the dissertations to the literature and practice is quite limited. Thus, the researchers turned their attention to the contribution of the dissertations produced in other disciplines in the field of social sciences. Several suggestions (e.g. developing researchers’ research skills, studying priority research topics in the Turkish context) were also made to increase the contribution of the dissertations to the literature and practice.

Citations are increasingly used for research evaluations. It is therefore important to identify factors affecting citation scores that are unrelated to scholarly quality or usefulness so that these can be taken into account. Regression is the most powerful statistical technique to identify these factors and hence it is important to identify the best regression strategy for citation data. Citation counts tend to follow a discrete lognormal distribution and, in the absence of alternatives, have been investigated with negative binomial regression. Using simulated discrete lognormal data (continuous lognormal data rounded to the nearest integer) this article shows that a better strategy is to add one to the citations, take their log and then use the general linear (ordinary least squares) model for regression (e.g., multiple linear regression, ANOVA), or to use the generalised linear model without the log. Reasonable results can also be obtained if all the zero citations are discarded, the log is taken of the remaining citation counts and then the general linear model is used, or if the generalised linear model is used with the continuous lognormal distribution. Similar approaches are recommended for altmetric data, if it proves to be lognormally distributed

Doctoral Research Output in Social Sciences in India during 2010-2014 : A Study

Presents a trend of doctoral research activities undertaken in social sciences across the institutes of higher learning in India. The study is based on the secondary data compiled from the bibliography of doctoral dissertations, published on an annual basis by the Association of Indian Universities in India, in the field of social sciences during 2010-2014. The study revealed that in all, 5788 doctoral degrees were awarded across 171 institutes of Higher Learning in India in as many as 17 different social science subject disciplines, with an average of 340.47 doctoral degrees in each subject field. On an average, each individual, institution has awarded 33.84 doctoral degrees. Education, commerce and economics are the three leading subject disciplines, in which maximum doctoral degrees were awarded, while as Tourism stands at the bottom. Similarly, at the state level, the maximum doctoral degrees were awarded from Gujarat, which is followed by Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, while as at institutional level; Dr B.R. Amedkar Marathwada University, Jawaharlal University and Maharishi Dayanand University are the three leading institutes across the country, which awarded the maximum number of doctoral degrees.
