Control of upconversion luminescence by gold nanoparticle size: from quenching to enhancement

Abstract: We report on the quenching-to-enhancement continuous transition of gold-nanoparticle (AuNP) plasmon assisted upconversion (UC) luminescence with increasing AuNP size, as a guideline for the design of optimal sensors based on UCNPs-AuNPs pairs.

“…Next, a silica layer as a spacer was coated on the Au CSNA film to prevent emission quenching by direct contact between the UCNPs and the nanostructure such that an enhanced emission of UCNPs can be achieved. [ 44,45 ] The silica layer was formed via the sol–gel method, and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of an ≈10 nm‐thick silica layer‐coated Au CSNA is shown in Figure 1D. The UCNPs (20 mol% Er 3+ ‐doped NaYF 4 , NaYF 4 :Er[20%]) were synthesized and their optical properties were analyzed.…”

“…The nature of this energy transfer is based on donor-acceptor dipole-dipole interactions, and greatly depends on parameters such as dipole to dipole orientation, degree of overlapping between donor emission and acceptor absorption spectra, donor-acceptor distance, quantum efficiency of donor, etc. 15,16 One of the first examples reported in literature regarding the development of a RET-based homogeneous assay using UCNPs as energy donors is the work by Wang et al 17 In this study the presence of avidin brought in close proximity biotin conjugated UCNPs (i.e. the donors) and Au-biotin nanoparticles (i.e.…”

“…Gonzalez synthesized Au NPs with different sizes and discussed their influence on the luminescence of UCNPs. The strong luminescence quenching was observed for small AuNPs due to resonance energy transfer, and the reduction of luminescence quenching was observed with the further increase of AuNPs size [121].…”
