Control Of Water Mobility Using Polymers and Multivalent Cations

Abstract: A newly developed process using a combination of water-soluble polymers and multivalent cations to reduce water mobility has been tested in the laboratory. The process treats the porous media with a sequence of three slugs, porous media with a sequence of three slugs, the first and third being polymer solutions and the second being a solution of a selected multivalent cation. Calcium, magnesium, and aluminum cations have been used with partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamides or copolymers of acrylamide in laborat… Show more

“…Traditionally, there have been two methods of gel injection for the purpose of water control: addressed bulk gel and sequential injection (Needham et al, 1974). Moreover, several types of newly developed techniques, such as size-controlled microgels and pHsensitive polymers with various crosslinkers, have been introduced in recent years.…”

“…Many studies have been carried out to demonstrate the gel's capability as a conformance control agent and some field applications have been reported (Needham et al, 1974;Whittington and Naae, 1992;Fletcher et al, 1992). However, these types of treatments could be effective if near wellbore coning is the only factor inducing water production.…”
