Viruses are estimated to be responsible for approximately 50% of the emerging plant diseases, which are difficult to control, and in some cases, there is no cure. It is essential to develop therapy practices to strengthen the management of these diseases caused by viruses in economically important crops. Metal nanoparticles (MeNPs) possess diverse physicochemical properties that allow for them to have a wide range of applications in industry, including nanomedicine and nano-agriculture. Currently, there are reports of favorable effects of the use of nanoparticles, such as antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral effects, in animals and plants. The potential antiviral property of MeNPs makes them a powerful option for controlling these histological agents. It is crucial to determine the dosage of NPs, the application intervals, their effect as a biostimulant, and the clarification of the mechanisms of action, which are not fully understood. Therefore, this review focuses on discussing the ability of metal nanoparticles and metal oxides to control viruses that affect agriculture through an exhaustive analysis of the characteristics of the particles and their interaction processes for a possibly beneficial effect on plants.

Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) is a commercially important plant worldwide. The leaves of Stevia rebaudiana contain steviol glycosides which are non-caloric, high-potency sweeteners. They are suitable for substituting sucrose and other artificial sweetening agents. Stevia rebaudiana also has many different therapeutic uses, with antidiabetic, anti-cariogenic, antimicrobial, anticancer and antioxidative properties. Rebaudioside A and stevioside are the major glycosides produced in its leaves. However, development of new varieties of Stevia rebaudiana with a greater content of rebaudioside A and decreased content of stevioside is the main concern lately. This is due to rebaudioside A having a more desirable sweet flavour taste than stevioside which possesses bitter aftertaste. In respect to that many biotechnological approaches are being used for the industrial improvement and manipulation of steviol glycosides content of Stevia rebaudiana. Transcriptome profiling has emerged as a useful tool to identify target genes involved in the steviol glycosides biosynthesis pathway. Understanding the mechanism and biosynthesis pathway of these compounds has further helped to improve the glycosides profile by up-regulating and down-regulating the desired genes. The aim of this paper is to describe the latest development in the transcriptome profiling in Stevia rebaudiana as well as to discuss the methods used in this endeavour.

Hairy roots (HRs) grown in vitro are a powerful platform for plant biotechnological advances and for the bio-based production of metabolites of interest. In this work, black carrot HRs able to accumulate anthocyanin as major secondary metabolite were used. Biomass and anthocyanin accumulation were improved by modulating growth medium composition—different Murashige & Skoog (MS)-based media—and H2O2-elicitation, and the level of the main antioxidant enzymes on elicited HRs was measured. Higher growth was obtained on liquid 1/2 MS medium supplemented with 60 g/L sucrose for HRs grown over 20 days. In this medium, 200 µM H2O2 applied on day 12 induced anthocyanin accumulation by 20%. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD)—which generates H2O2 from O2•−—increased by over 50%, whereas the activity of H2O2-scavenging enzymes was not enhanced. Elicitation in the HRs can result in a controlled oxidative burst, in which SOD activity increased H2O2 levels, whereas anthocyanins, as effective reactive oxygen species scavengers, could be induced to modulate the oxidative burst generated. Moreover, given the proven stability of the HR lines used and their remarkable productivity, this system appears as suitable for elucidating the interplay between antioxidant and secondary metabolism.
