Controlled Release of a Sparingly Water‐Soluble Anticancer Drug through pH‐Responsive Functionalized Gold‐Nanoparticle‐Decorated Liposomes

Abstract: The binding and detachment of carboxyl-modified gold nanoparticles from liposomes is used for controlled drug delivery. This study reveals that the binding and detachment of nanoparticles from liposomes depends on the degree of hydration of the liposomes. Liposomes with a lower hydration level undergo stronger electrostatic interactions with negatively charged gold nanoparticles, thus leading to a slower detachment of the carboxyl-modified gold nanoparticles under gastric conditions. Therefore, under gastric c… Show more

“…For the time‐resolved studies, we used a picosecond time‐correlated single‐photon counting (TCSPC) system from IBH (model Fluorocube‐01‐NL). The experimental setup for TCSPC has been described elsewhere . The samples were excited at 480 nm using a picosecond diode laser and the decays were collected at 600 nm.…”

“…Several methods are concerned with the functionalization of GNPs with different compounds like PEG, DNA and RNA, peptides, antibodies, lipids, and also small drug molecules to increase their adhesion and interactions with biological molecules and cells acting as targeted drug-carriers [ 99 , 101 , 102 , 103 , 104 , 105 , 106 ]. In such study, glyco-dithiocarbamate (DTC) copolymers were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) and subsequently used to prepare glyconanoparticles and conjugated glyconanoparticles with the anticancer drug gold(I) triphenylphosphine ( Figure 4 ) [ 104 ].…”

“…A wide variety of drugs have been encapsulated in liposomes, and the lipid composition of liposomes can be altered to increase the encapsulation efficiency of different drugs. Liposomes can also be tuned to release their cargo in response to various stimuli, including acidic pH or hyperthermia . Encapsulation of toxic drugs into liposomes can significantly reduce off‐target toxicity, as well as increase the half‐life of drugs in the body .…”
