Controlling Induction System Deposits in Flexible Fuel Vehicles Operating on E85

The objectives of the present work are to investigate the regulated and unregulated (particle) emissions of a classical and modern 2-stroke and a typical 4-stroke scooter with different ethanol blend fuels. There is also comparison of two different ethanol fuels: pure ethanol (E) *) and hydrous ethanol (EH) which contains 3.9% water and is denatured with 1.5% gasoline. Special attention is paid in this research to the hydrous ethanol, since the production costs of hydrous ethanol are much less than those for (dry) ethanol.

Oceny paliw etanolowych w testach silnikowych i eksploatacyjnych W artykule przedstawiono problem tworzenia szkodliwych osadów w silnikach z zapłonem iskrowym. Opisano wpływ osadów na właściwości użytkowo-eksploatacyjne silników oraz metody ich badań. Scharakteryzowano osady tworzone na różnych elementach roboczych silnika oraz układu wtrysku paliwa. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na badania właści-wości eksploatacyjnych paliw etanolowych. Wyjaśniono przyczyny możliwych niekompatybilności dodatków detergentowych stosowanych do standardowych benzyn silnikowych z etanolem. Przytoczono dostępne w literaturze przykłady badań paliw etanolowych w zakresie udziału etanolu do 100% (V/V). Wyniki tych badań wykazały pozytywny wpływ etanolu w benzynie silnikowej na ograniczanie skłonności do tworzenia osadów, zwłaszcza w przypadku użycia odpowiednio uszlachetnionego paliwa. W podsumowaniu wskazano dostępne środki techniczne, jakie mogą być zastosowane podczas przeciwdziałania tworzeniu się szkodliwych osadów w silniku.Słowa kluczowe: benzyna, paliwo etanolowe, osady w silniku, dodatki do paliw. Evaluation of ethanol fuels in engine and field testsThe article presents problem of harmful deposits formation in spark ignition engines. Deposits impact on engine operating properties and methods of their tests has been described. The article also describes deposits build up on different engine elements and the fuel injection system. Particular attention was paid to testing the operating properties of ethanol blend fuels. The sources of possible incompatibilities of detergent additives used in standard petrol with ethanol have been explained. The cited examples of the available scientific literature, of studies of ethanol fuel in the share of ethanol to 100% by volume were presented. The results of these studies showed a positive effect of ethanol content in petrol, on reducing the tendency to form deposits, especially in the case of application of the appropriate fuel treatment. In conclusion, the technical means available, which can be used during the counteracting of the formation of harmful deposits in the engine have been indicated.
