Convective and radiant (IR) curing of bulk and waterborne epoxy coatings as thin layers. Part II: Infrared curing

Abstract: In the first part of this paper, a method for studying the curing of 100‐μm‐thick epoxy‐based layers on steel substrates was described. In this second part, we extend our study to radiative (infrared) heating conditions. A simple waterborne epoxy reactive system based on a diglycidylether of bisphenol‐A prepolymer and a polyether triamine was used. The chemical kinetics during infrared heating were studied with the reaction kinetics recorded during convective heating. A second order autocatalytic model describ… Show more

“…Epoxy resins are an important class of thermosetting polymers that are chiefly used as adhesives, laminates, boards, molds for casting, and composite materials in the aerospace and aircraft industries 1–4. In addition to these applications, these resins find substantial application in high‐performance surface coatings 5, 6. Coatings from epoxies have been found to show marked resistance to chemicals and corrosive environments.…”

“…Bruker Advance 400 Hz was used to perform 13 C-NMR spectroscopy on all the BEA resins. The sharp peaks and broad chemical shifts without overlapping help identify the type of carbon atom, thus confirming the backbone structure of the compound.…”

“…[8][9][10][11] Additionally, these resins have found considerable development in the field of high-performance surface coatings owing to their resistance to chemicals and corrosive environments. 12,13 These benefits from epoxy lead to the development of hybrid epoxy acrylate photosensitive resin. Acrylate functional monomers deliver outstanding performance in the external environment and generate quick reactivity.…”

“…A mathematical model for the heating of powder-primer-coated automotive panels with simultaneous curing of the primer was considered on the basis of commonly practiced methods. The main purpose of the model was to investigate whether the SMC panels are overheated in the plant ovens that are typically designed and optimized for sheet metal panels. The possibility of overheating of the SMC panels becomes more significant when high intensity IR heating is used to melt and cure the powder layer.…”
