Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) techniques were evaluated and compared with conventional extraction for obtaining spent coffee ground oil (SCGO). The use of absolute ethanol (ET0) and hydrated ethanol (ET6) as solvents, two levels of SCG mass ratio:solvent, 1:4 (U4) and 1:15 (U15), and ultrasound powers of 0, 200, 400, and 600 W were tested. ET0 and U15 resulted in higher extraction yields of SCGO (YSCGO, 82%). A positive effect of sonication on YSCGO was observed only for condition U4. UAE resulted in defatted solids (DS) with higher apparent density values, corroborating the increase in the amount of smaller diameter particles due to sonication. The micrographs showed changes in the surfaces of the solids from the UAE and PLE, although the crystalline structures of the DS were not altered. UAE and PLE, compared to conventional extraction, did not allow significant gains in terms of YSCGO and, consequently, in the number of contact stages in an extractor configured in cross-currents.

In the present work, the influence of temperature, moisture content, and dehulling on the kinetic parameters of the oil extraction of high stearic high oleic (HSHO) sunflower seeds is analyzed. A modified Fick's diffusion model that considers extraction as the sum of two components (diffusion and washing) is used. The washing fraction (M 0 /M ∞ ) and diffusion coefficients (D eff ) are calculated taking into account the number of terms appropriate to each case. The statistical analysis shows a dependence of the washing fraction on temperature in the 40-50 °C range, while no statistical differences are detected in the 50-60 °C range. Although there are changes in the model parameters with the moisture content of the seeds (7.8%, 6.9%, and 4.8% dry basis), no specific trend is evidenced. The effective diffusion coefficient for the dehulled sample (1.48 ± 0.13 × 10 −12 m 2 s −1 ) is 60% higher than that of the unshelled sample (0.95 ± 0.05 × 10 −12 m 2 s −1 ). The extraction kinetics of tocopherols at 50 °C is also analyzed. Practical Applications: The manuscript performs an analysis of different factors that influence the extraction of oil from high stearic high oleic (HSHO) sunflower seeds, which directly affect the efficiency of the oil extraction process. The results of this study provide useful information for a joint evaluation of oil extraction yields and costs resulting from the processing of a non-conventional sunflower hybrid, promoting, in addition, the development of healthy high value-added oils.

BACKGROUNDIn this study, obtaining phytochemical compounds from coffee bean husk (Arabica variety) under pressurized conditions (PLE) was investigated. For this, an experimental design was applied to evaluate the efficiency of the extraction in different conditions of temperature, solvent to husk ratio and composition of the hydroethanolic solvent and to determine the maximum extraction conditions of total phenolic acids (TPA). The dry extract obtained under different conditions and by Soxhlet extraction was characterized.RESULTSThe conditions evaluated in the PLE showed that the composition of the hydroethanolic solvent had a greater influence on the results and the maximum extraction of TPA in the liquid extract (3.61 mg CAE 100 ghusk‐1) was achieved with 50% (v/v) ethanol in solvent, 45 mL g‐1 and 80 °C. Under these operational conditions, the extract obtained showed high mass yield (GY) and antioxidant activity (AA). Under pressurized conditions, synergism between operational variables and obtaining phytochemical compounds could be observed. Comparing the techniques, PLE provided a higher GY and AA, demonstrating the efficiency and selectivity of this technique in obtaining biologically active compounds. The main phenolic acids identified in the dry extract were gallic and chlorogenic, indicating an important role as an antioxidant and suggesting potential for its use.CONCLUSIONPLE is a potential method for green extraction to obtain phytochemical extract from coffee bean husk, which, associated with the recovery of compounds by obtaining the dry extract, presents advantages related to storage and handling, representing a starting point for the development of nutraceuticals that can be easily used as ingredients or additives in the chemical industry.This article is protected by copyright.
