Convergence in electricity consumption across Indian states: a disaggregated analysis

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine whether the electricity consumption patterns across Indian states do converge. Design/methodology/approach This study considers 18 Indian states spanning over the period 1970-1971 and 2014-2015, using the recently developed Phillips and Sul panel convergence technique that accounts the multiple steady states. Findings The results provide the following insights. First, the authors find evidence of convergence in electricity consumption among all Indian states.… Show more

“…In addition, the empirical findings of Erdogan et al (2020) show that disaggregated level of energy consumption in Turkey is not stationary during the period 1970-2016. Besides, the empirical findings of Jangam et al (2019) supported that electricity consumption in Indian states is converged to an equilibrium regarding aggregated data, while disaggregated data provide different results across sectors. Lastly, Shi et al (2020) exhibited that households' energy consumption has two convergence clubs in China for the period 2014 and 2016.…”

“…This statistic has become popular nowadays and we can find several examples of its use for analyzing the disparities in the evolution of variables for a number of countries or regions. We can cite the papers by González-Álvarez, et al [24], who analyze the evolution of obesity for a sample of countries; Clemente, et al [25], who study the dispersion of health expenditure across the US states; Rodríguez-Benavides, et al [26], who investigate convergence in Latin America; and Jangam, et al [27], who focus on electricity consumption in India.…”

“…The energy transition concept has been growing in academic and political circles for more than three decades; first in developed and then in developing countries, giving rise to both theoretical and empirical debates (Leach, 1992;Solomon and Krishna, 2011;Dominkovi c et al, 2018;Li et al, 2020;Jangam et al, 2020;Bouyghrissi et al, 2022;Akram et al, 2023). Addressing the issue of energy transition is central to the achievement of the SDGs, notably SDG-7.…”
