Conversation Analysis Methodology in Second Language Studies

Abstract

Applying conversation analysis to any field of research involves methodological adaptations in relation to the research interests of that field. The application of CA to second language (L2) studies is no exception. This entry presents some of the challenges CA researchers in the field of L2 studies have encountered and the compromises they have made. It reports on choices that have been made in relation to research objectives, data collection, and analytical procedures. The entry categorizes types of L2 studies; it explains the methodological choices in the different types of studies and shows how they shift in scope over time by presenting examples.
