Cooperative carbon emission reduction through the Belt and Road Initiative

Abstract: Carbon emission reduction under the Belt and Road Initiative has great significance on China’s goal of carbon peak. To better promote carbon emission reduction, based on the background of the Belt and Road Initiative, this paper analyzes the collaborative carbon emission reduction through investment between Chinese enterprises and local enterprises in developing countries along the Belt and Road Initiative. Considering the efforts of enterprises in carbon reduction, low-carbon infrastructure investment, and pr… Show more

“…According to the research report Challenges of Maintaining Global Warming Below 2 • C by the Tyndall Center for Climate Change Research, China, as the world's largest energy consumer, ranks first in the world in terms of total carbon emissions [8], and its carbon emissions amounted to 37.2 billion tons in 2018 [9]. The Chinese government has realized that 2 of 21 China should participate extensively in international climate cooperation and undertake its corresponding international obligations [10,11]. Hence, at the 75th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Chinese government proposed China's commitment and strategic goals to reach peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 [12].…”

“…This policy dialogue will guide MNEs about human health, climate change, and environmental conservation in the home and host countries (Ascensão et al, 2018). Mao and Wang (2022) also stated that the likelihood of carbon emission reduction is more when CMNEs have invested and collaborated with local enterprises in developing countries and used low‐carbon infrastructure investment, and promoted low‐carbon products. In nutshell, localization increases the aggregate gains from the BRI.…”

“…Carbon emission reduction under the BRI is of great significance to China and other participating countries in addressing climate change [ 31 ]. If China and the BRI carry out green cooperation, it will not only help the two sides to jointly cope with climate change [ 32 ], but also benefit the whole world in many ways [ 33 ]. Greening infrastructure and energy investments in the BRI will have an important impact on carbon emission reduction globally [ 34 ].…”
