Cooperative method development

Abstract: The development of methods tools and process improvements is best to be based on the understanding of the development practice to be supported. Qualitative research has been proposed as a method for understanding the social and cooperative aspects of software development. However, qualitative research is not easily combined with the improvement orientation of an engineering discipline. During the last 6 years, we have applied an approach we call 'cooperative method development', which combines qualitative soci… Show more

“…More strictly, a case study is purely observational while action research is focused on and involved in the change process. In software process improvement (Dittrich et al 2008;Iversen et al 2004) and technology transfer studies (Gorschek et al 2006), the research method should be characterized as action research. However, when studying the effects of a change, e.g.…”

“…We followed the Cooperative Method Development approach, a "domain specific adaptation of action research" that moves from an ethnographically-inspired understanding of the "existing practice of software development in concrete industrial settings" and aims at improving such practice by cooperating with practitioners [6].…”

“…According to Dittrich et al (2008), CMD has been applied in different research projects outlining different aspects within software engineering (e.g. design of flexible and adaptable software; agile development for e-government applications; and the integration of interaction design and software development).…”
