Coordinated variation in root and leaf functional traits of Hippophae rhamnoides treated at different stump heights in feldspathic sandstone areas of Inner Mongolia

Abstract: This study was aimed to clarify the effects of stumping on root and leaf traits as well as the tradeoffs and synergies of decaying Hippophae rhamnoides in feldspathic sandstone areas, and to select the optimal stump height that contributed to the recovery and growth of H. rhamnoides. variations and coordination between leaf traits and fine root traits of H. rhamnoides were studied at different stump heights (0, 10, 15, 20 cm, and no stumping) in feldspathic sandstone areas. All functional traits of the leaves … Show more

“…The average diameter (RAD), length, and surface morphology were measured using a WinRHIZO Pro 2012b (Regent Instruments Inc., Quebec City, Canada). The roots were then dried in an oven at 60 °C for 48 h, their weight was monitored, and the dry weight was recorded at constant weight (Liu et al, 2023b). Finally, root length density (RLD, cm cm −3 ), root mass density (RMD, mg cm 3 ), and root surface area density (RSAD, cm 2 cm −3 ) were calculated.…”

“…The aboveground parts of a plant will undergo compensatory growth after destruction, which stimulates an increase in root biomass. Roots store abundant starch to provide nutrition for rapid recovery of the crown or foliage (Fang et al, 2006;Hamilton et al, 2013;Liu et al, 2023b). The present study analyzed the distributions of root and soil properties associated with different stump heights.…”
