Coordination Compounds as Building Blocks:  Single-Step Synthesis of Heteronuclear Multimetallic Complexes Containing RuII and OsII

Abstract: A novel and powerful approach for the synthesis of heterometallic complexes containing RuII and OsII is described. Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions between [(bpy)2M1(L1)]2+ and [(bpy)2M2(L2)]2+ (where L1 and L2 are bromo- and ethynyl-functionalized 1,10-phenanthroline ligands) provide heteronuclear complexes in a single synthetic step.

“…[40] The complex RuL2 displays very similar properties; for instance, a notable shift in the lowest-energy absorption band from 426 and 455 nm for RuL1 to 440 mine groups are located at the 3, 5, 6 and 8 positions, [14] and for the complex [Ru(bpy) 2 (phenBr 2 )] 2+ without tert-butyl groups. [30] A further bathochromic shift of the absorption occurs for RuL3. The band maxima located at 286 and 322 nm are assigned to ligand-centred π-π* transitions of tbbpy and L3, respectively.…”

“…Its complexation with ligands 2 and 4a-4c under standard conditions, [26] e.g. mixing of the reagents in MeOH or EtOH and refluxing the mixture for several hours under an inert atmosphere, afforded the desired products 5 and 6 in poor yields (12-30 %) accompanied by some byproducts.…”

“…One possibility is to use the 5-and 5Ј-positions of a 2,2Ј-bipyridine [8] or the 3-and 8-positions of a 1,10-phenanthroline. [9] In this case, the axis will, of course, not run through the central metal; (III) the presently described system contains a three-bidentate ligand complex. It clearly shows a helical arrangement built on two ligands and their linker.…”
