Coordination of distributed generation and step voltage regulator operations for improved distribution system voltage regulation

Abstract: This paper presents coordination of distributed generation (DG) and step voltage regulator (SVR) operations for improved distribution system voltage regulations. Examples include DG with induction and synchronous generators and SVRs with different control modes.

“…Baldick and Wu [8] have developed a coordinated approach for the operation of switched capacitors and OLTC in a radial distribution system by approximating the problem as a constrained discrete quadratic optimization. In [9], a method for coordinating the operation of DG and step voltage regulator for improvement of distribution system voltage regulation has been presented. In [17], a coordination scheme is developed for coordination of a single DG with OLTC with an advanced LDC which is developed based on uniformly distributed load.…”

“…However, the addition of DG may complicate protection coordination and voltage control. If not properly handled, lower reliability and even a reduction in power quality can result [2].…”

“…Basic voltage control resources in distribution networks are under-load tap changing transformers (ULTCTs) and off-voltage tap changing transformers (OVTCTs). References [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] examine the impact of DGs on the voltage control resources and at the same time suggest various procedures required for their mutual coordination aiming to achieve the optimal voltage control. The ULTCT are dealt with in most cases.…”
