The boundary system of a firm is intended to set constraints to the behaviour of organisational participants and, by this, to affect decision-making in the direction of the firm's overall objective. In growing firms, the boundary system is subject to a particular tension: balancing the search for new opportunities and innovation with behavioural constraints to deal with increasing size and intra-organisational complexity. Against this background, the paper studies the adaptation of the boundary system in growing firms. For this, an agent-based simulation based on the framework of NK fitness landscapes is employed which is a rather new approach in the domain of management control systems. The study controls for different levels of task complexity and for different styles in firms' search for new opportunities in terms of exploitative, explorative or ambidextrous search strategies. The results suggest that the level of task complexity subtly interferes with the search strategy employed in respect of the emerging boundaries. In particular, results support the conjecture that growing task complexity leads to more coordination via hierarchy. However, the search strategy employed shapes the predominance of boundaries compared to less constraining modes of coordination granting higher levels of autonomy to subordinates.

It has long been recognised that the identification of organizational members with their organization could mitigate collective action problems. One domain in economics and management addressing these fundamental problems is organizational control, as it focuses on aligning individuals' behavior with their organization's objectives. This paper studies organizational identification in interaction with major traits of the organizational context, including the principal means of organizational control. The study uses an agent-based simulation based on the framework NK fitness landscapes. In the model, individuals' organizational identification emerges endogenously and causes certain effects in the organizations, which in turn induce feedback on identification. The model controls for different activation mechanisms for individuals' organizational identity and for different organizational contexts in terms of task complexity and the prevailing coordination mechanism. The results suggest that the activation mechanisms subtly interfere with task complexity and organizational controls. Organizational identification was robustly beneficial across a wide range of task environments when the activation mode corresponds to organizational mission orientation and results controls. Moreover, organizational identification appears particularly relevant when the action controls grant some autonomy to subordinate decision-makers.

Understanding the dynamics emerging from infodemics: a call to action for interdisciplinary research

Research on infodemics, i.e., the rapid spread of (mis)information related to a hazardous event, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, requires integrating a multiplicity of scientific disciplines. The dynamics emerging from infodemics have the potential to generate complex behavioral patterns. To react appropriately, it is of ultimate importance for the fields of Business and Economics to understand these dynamics. In the short run, they might lead to an adaptation in household spending or to a shift in buying behavior towards online providers. In the long run, changes in investments, consumer behavior, and markets are to be expected. We argue that the dynamics emerge from complex interactions among multiple factors, such as information and misinformation accessible to individuals and the formation and revision of beliefs. (Mis)information accessible to individuals is, amongst others, affected by algorithms specifically designed to provide personalized information, while automated fact-checking algorithms can help reduce the amount of circulating misinformation. The formation and revision of individual (and probably false) beliefs and individual fact-checking and interpretation of information are heavily affected by linguistic patterns inherent to information during pandemics and infodemics and further factors, such as affect, intuition, and motives. We argue that, to get a deep(er) understanding of the dynamics emerging from infodemics, the fields of Business and Economics should integrate the perspectives of Computer Science and Information Systems, (Computational) Linguistics, and Cognitive Science into the wider context of economic systems (e.g., organizations, markets or industries) and propose a way to do so. As research on infodemics is a strongly interdisciplinary field and the integration of the above-mentioned disciplines is a first step towards a holistic approach, we conclude with a call to action which should encourage researchers to collaborate across scientific disciplines and unfold collective creativity, which will substantially advance research on infodemics.
