Copeptin concentration following cardiac surgery as a prognostic marker of postoperative acute kidney injury: a prospective cohort study

Abstract: Background: Copeptin, the C-terminal portion of the arginine vasopressin precursor, is a novel candidate biomarker. This study investigated the prognostic value of copeptin levels following cardiac surgery for the occurrence of postoperative acute kidney injury. Methods: We studied 23 patients who underwent cardiac surgery between January 2018 and December 2019. The primary endpoint was postoperative acute kidney injury onset. Copeptin levels were measured before, right after, and daily for 7 days. The patient… Show more

“…14 Elevated p-Copeptin has previously been reported to be associated with acute kidney injury. 23 Renal function is sensitive to circulatory failure and some degree of renal failure is frequently seen after cardiac surgery. [35][36][37] Unless coincidental, these findings might partly explain the low incidence of renal dysfunction reported with a metabolic strategy involving glutamate infusions in high-risk patients.…”

“…The sample size must be considered as glutamate was associated with a significantly lower incidence of acute kidney injury in the main study, which included patients from all participating centres 14 . Elevated p‐Copeptin has previously been reported to be associated with acute kidney injury 23 . Renal function is sensitive to circulatory failure and some degree of renal failure is frequently seen after cardiac surgery 35–37 .…”
