Individuals with schizophrenia typically show increased levels of distractibility. This has been attributed to impaired working memory capacity (WMC), since lower WMC is typically associated with higher distractibility and schizophrenia is typically associated with impoverished WMC. Here, participants performed verbal and spatial serial recall tasks that were accompanied by to-be-ignored speech tokens. For the few trials wherein one speech token was replaced with a different token, impairment was produced to task scores (a deviation effect). Participants subsequently completed a schizotypy questionnaire and a WMC measure. Higher schizotypy scores were associated with lower WMC (as measured with operation span [OSPAN]), but WMC and schizotypy scores explained unique variance in relation to the mean magnitude of the deviation effect. These results suggest that schizotypy is associated with heightened domain-general distractibility, but that this is independent of its relationship with WMC.

Abstract-Vocational services (VS), particularly supported employment models, have clear advantages for assisting adults with severe mental illness (SMI) in returning to the workplace, but a majority of eligible individuals with SMI do not receive any type of VS. The reasons for nonparticipation in VS remain poorly understood, and the potential contribution of cognitive impairment as a barrier to entry has not been explored. The present study uses a pathways-to-care design to examine the specific contribution of cognitive functioning to entry into VS among veterans with SMI. We examined 179 veterans with both SMI and un-or underemployment who completed a work history, the Pathways To Care Inventory, and the Trail-Making Test, Part B. Analysis revealed that veterans with SMI and moderate to severe cognitive impairment took significantly longer to progress through pathways-to-care than those with SMI and mild or no cognitive impairment. These results suggest that identifying veterans with SMI and cognitive impairment early and providing them with integrated and adjunct services may help them navigate VS.

i potiskivanju emocija te razlike u odnosu na spol, dob, bračni status, zanimanje i zaposlenje. Rasprava: Razlike u sučeljavanju kod oboljelih od psihičkih poremeća-ja nisu određene njihovom psihopatologijom, što je u skladu s istraživanjima drugih istraživača. Sudionici u istraživanju prošli su ili je bilo u tijeku liječenje u dnevnoj bolnici gdje se primjenjuju psihosocijalne metode liječenja, što je moglo utjecati na njihove stilove suče-ljavanja. Zaključak: Rezultati istraživanja potvrđuju da se zdrave osobe koriste funkcionalnijim stilovima suče-ljavanja u odnosu na oboljele od psihičkih poremećaja. Nismo pronašli specifične stilove sučeljavanja u odnosu na pojedine dijagnostičke skupine, što govori u prilog podatcima da sučeljavanje ovisi o brojnim faktorima.
