Coplanar waveguide‐FED planar spiral antenna with integrated impedance transformer

Abstract: A new planar spiral antenna with integrated impedance transformer is presented which needs no external balun and can be fed by a coplanar waveguide. The proposed structure has a return loss of <−10 dB over a broad bandwidth of 0.5–5 GHz that is suitable for cognitive radio applications. The effects of different spiral and transformer parameters are investigated through various simulations. A case of the proposed antenna is fabricated, and measurement results are presented including return loss, gain, and radiat… Show more

“…3,4,[6][7][8][9][10] The vertical impedance transformer (balun) always has an essentially long length and contributes to the high profile antenna and causes problems in the assembly of the antenna. 11 Additionally, it makes the antenna structure nonplanar, complex, and large size, 12 conflicting with the requirements of the low-profile geometry which makes the entire antenna voluminous. This threedimensional feeding way is well investigated in the past.…”

“…Besides, the use of coplanar wave‐guide feed is only suitable for spiral slot structure or three‐arm spiral antenna with a planar CPW feed 23 . A novel planar spiral antenna with an incorporated impedance transformer is proposed in 12 that does not need an external balun and may be fed by a CPW. The approach of using CPW to feed ultra‐wideband coplanar strips (CPS) rectangular spiral antenna is suggested in 24 where the CPS consists of a gradual lowering in the width of CPW ground planes without a required balun.…”
