Copolythiophene-Derived Colorimetric and Fluorometric Sensor for Visually Supersensitive Determination of Lipopolysaccharide

Abstract: 3-Phenylthiophene-based water-soluble copolythiophenes (CPT1) were designed for colorimetric and fluorometric detection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The sensor (CPT1-C) shows a high selectivity to LPS in the presence of other negatively charged bioanalytes as well an extreme sensitivity with the detection limit at picomolar level, which is the lowest ever achieved among all synthetic LPS sensors available thus far. Significantly, the sensing interaction can be apparently observed by the naked eyes, which prese… Show more

“…42 In addition, when uorescent intensity based probes are used in complicated biosystems, the detection are inuenced by the probe concentration, autouorescence, and instrumental factors. 43,44 Ratiometric sensing is highly recommended because this property makes it feasible to evaluate the analytes more accurately with minimization of the background signal. By comparison, based on absorption properties of the ground state, color changes are more suitable for direct observation with the naked eye.…”

“…2,3 As a result, the detection of the lipopolysaccharide endotoxin is important in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical products, medical devices and the food industry. 4 Currently, the most prevalent LPS test relies on the limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay, where the LAL is extracted from the blood of horseshoe crabs. However, the LAL assay is expensive, and the result can be either inhibited 5 or enhanced 6 especially in complicated biological samples.…”
