Coral Reef Bleaching under Climate Change: Prediction Modeling and Machine Learning

Abstract: The coral reefs are important ecosystems to protect underwater life and coastal areas. It is also a natural attraction that attracts many tourists to eco-tourism under the sea. However, the impact of climate change has led to coral reef bleaching and elevated mortality rates. Thus, this paper modeled and predicted coral reef bleaching under climate change by using machine learning techniques to provide the data to support coral reefs protection. Supervised machine learning was used to predict the level of cora… Show more

“…We believe that during this time, climate change issues became more visible because worldwide climate change forums shifted (Demekas, Grippa, 2021;Pattberg et al, 2022). Consequently, more researchers began drawing relationships to coral bleaching and climate change (Boonnam et al, 2022;Hannah, 2022;van Woesik et al, 2022). Also, 2005 was the hottest year on record for sea surface temperature, which impacted coral reef conditions through hurricanes in the Caribbean and Atlantic basin.…”

“…Here we provide illustrations of ongoing environmental projects, including the protection of sensitive coral reefs from the detrimental effects of bleaching, the transformation of tweets into early warning signals, and the utilization of community feedback as a defense against environmental hazards. [79] discuss the detrimental impact that an increase in ocean temperatures has on the health and survival of diverse coral reefs. Nevertheless, this project provides a glimmer of optimism.…”

“…Therefore, this method is considered simple and effective to be applied in the classification and prediction process. This method applies Bayes' Theorem in determining the data class [28]. Classification of data classes based on Bayes' theorem makes Naive Bayes have a performance comparable to decision trees and neural networks.…”
