Core body temperature and the thermoneutral zone: a longitudinal study of normal human pregnancy

Abstract: Maternal core temperature is highest in the first trimester but falls during pregnancy to a nadir 3 months post-partum. The ambient temperature required to reach the thermoneutral zone was 4 °C lower at 36 weeks of gestation compared with early pregnancy and late post-partum. Human temperature regulation is altered in pregnancy and for at least 3 months post-partum.

“…Than the results of laboratory tests in acute condition should be compared with the previous obtained during earlier phases of pregnancy. Furthermore, fever in pregnancy may be blunted by decreased maternal core temperature, increased levels of placenta‐derived anti‐inflammatory factors like interleukin‐1 receptor antagonist and altered brain sensitivity to the pyrogenic action of prostaglandins . Also, whenever toxic megacolon is suspected, based on maternal clinical conditions, imaging of colonic dilatation should be expeditiously obtained, either by MRI or x‐ray. 2‐.…”

“…Whether subjects were in their thermoneutral zone was confirmed by characteristic skin perfusion variations at the ventral side of the hand [two to three vasoconstrictions per minute (Thoresen & Walloe 1980, Bergersen 1993, Hartgill et al 2011]. The measurements lasted 3.5 h. The protocol started with a 30-min thermoneutral baseline period (air temperature = 30.1 AE 0.1°C).…”

“…Severe maternal hyperthermia (over-heating) due to illness appears to increase the incidence of foetal malformation 35) . In a study by Hartgill et al, 2011, it was found that human temperature regulation is altered in pregnancy. Maternal core temperature was at its highest in the first trimester but fell during pregnancy with its lowest point 3 months post-delivery and persisted until 6 months after delivery in breast-feeding women.…”

“…Maternal core temperature was at its highest in the first trimester but fell during pregnancy with its lowest point 3 months post-delivery and persisted until 6 months after delivery in breast-feeding women. The causes of the delayed return to normal temperature can currently only be speculated on 60) . It also appears that women, especially older women, are more at risk, in both relative and absolute terms, of dying in a heat wave 44) .…”
