Core-Periphery Structure in Networks

Abstract: Intermediate-scale (or 'meso-scale') structures in networks have received considerable attention, as the algorithmic detection of such structures makes it possible to discover network features that are not apparent either at the local scale of nodes and edges or at the global scale of summary statistics. Numerous types of meso-scale structures can occur in networks, but investigations of such features have focused predominantly on the identification and study of community structure. In this paper, we develop a… Show more

“…This suggests that even if there were no such a standard core-periphery structure in the empirical network, the estimation method classifies each node as either a core node or a peripheral node. In fact, recent studies argue that the seemingly core-periphery structure might just come from a heterogeneous degree distribution or consist of two cores [88][89][90]. As an example, visualization of Italian interbank networks aggregated over 10 business days is presented in Fig.…”

“…The edge labels in are all . is used for community detection in the periphery nodes, an interesting problem studied in various networks (e.g., friend-ship, collaboration, transportation, and voting) [23]. Intuitively, people in the periphery who have close interactions with the same set of core people (at least 2 long calls in both directions) tend to be in the same community.…”

“…In recent studies financial networks have stylized features with the presence of a particular type of meso-scale structure known as core-periphery, in which a densely connected subset of nodes (core) coexists with a sparsely connected partition (periphery), while the members of the core act as intermediaries between members of the periphery [6]. The composition of the cores, whose constituents are identified as the set of systemically important international financial centers, is rather small and remains stable over time.…”
