Coriolis Metering Technology for CO2 Transportation for Carbon Capture and Storage

Abstract: Highly reliable and accurate Coriolis meters have been proposed for metering carbon dioxide in carbon capture and storage (CCS) operations to provide accurate flow measurements. However, there is a lack of calibration studies to quantify Coriolis measurements uncertainty for liquefied CO 2 . In this study, a first of its kind apparatus was designed, built and used to calibrate an industrial scale Coriolis meter using CO 2 in liquid phase . The standard uncertainty of the meter was evaluated within the temperat… Show more

“…Small scale gravimetric trials have also been completed at Herriot-Watt University with pure CO2 liquid and measurement uncertainties of around 0.11 % (k=2) for mass have been reported [38]. They have also been operated successfully in dense phase / supercritical ethylene applications for custody transfer [39].…”

“…68 The uncertainty of a Coriolis flowmeter has been reported as 0.11% by mass using a rig based on gravimetric calibration at Heriot-Watt University and flowing pure CO 2 in the liquid phase. 22,69 The performance of the Coriolis flowmeter was also investigated using the same flow rig and in the presence of mixtures of CO 2 and impurities representing the captured streams from pre-combustion, post-combustion and oxyfuel technologies. Tests were conducted in the steady state and transient conditions at temperature and pressure conditions expected in industrial CO 2 transport pipelines.…”
