“…More recently, Crushell (2008) surveyed the aquatic macroinvertebrates of Clara bog, Co. Offaly, a raised bog which is particularly important for its soak systems. Other studies have described the macroinvertebrate fauna of artificial lakes found on cutaway raised bog in County Offaly (O'Connor et al, 2000). de Leeuw (1986) investigated the occurrence and distribution of macroinvertebrates in peatlands along an east to west gradient across the country in summer 1984 but this remains unpublished and relatively inaccessible.…”

“…Peatland habitats have also been incorporated in numerous studies that describe the distribution of different invertebrate groups in Ireland and Northern Ireland (Foster et al 1992;Nelson et al 1998;Nelson 2005). Only a small number of studies have described the communities of restored sites (O'Connor et al 2000;Trodd 2003;Higgins et al 2007). In the present study aquatic invertebrates were chosen as the ecological indicator in order to assess the success of the restoration measures employed at Kippure/Liffey Head blanket bog in County Wicklow.…”

“…Despite over 50 years of research into commercial, market-driven after-use options for cutaway peatlands, the non-market options have rarely been explored to any practical extent. In those peatland areas that have been fully harvested, spontaneous and/or managed regeneration has been shown to promote new nature which infers that cutaway areas have the potential to be used to augment biological diversity (Foss & O'Connell, 1996;O'Connor et al, 2000;Rowlands & Feehan, 2000;Trodd, 2003). There is some evidence that local communities may place a high value on non-market after-uses of regenerating peatlands (Barron et al, 1994;Egan, 1994Egan, , 1999Foss & O'Connell, 1996;Anon., 2006), but a working blueprint to realise this has not yet been established nor has there been an audit of community perceptions of peatlands either intact or harvested.…”
