Agricultural waste based low cost oxidized activated carbon (OSD) and un-oxidized activated carbon (USD) samples were prepared from saw dust of Ziziphus jujube by chemical activation with phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ). The activated carbon was used for the removal of toxic metal ions such as cadmium(II) and lead(II) from aqueous solutions. The effect of pH (2-9), initial concentration (70-100 mg/L), contact time (5-700 min), activated carbon dose (0.1-1.0 g) and temperature (298-328 K) was investigated. In addition, the kinetic study was performed at pH 6, while the carbon dose of 0.1 g was used for 40 mL solution of 70 mg/L at four different temperatures (298, 308, 318 and 328 K). The adsorption efficiency of USD was found higher than OSD. Comparatively higher uptake of Pb(II) ions was observed by each carbon sample. Pseudo-second order equation best fitted the experimental data. As such, both activated carbon samples (USD and OSD) exhibited higher adsorption capacities and faster kinetics which revealed their commercial usefulness.

Corncob was calcined within a temperature range of 300 °C to 700 °C to prepare a series of corncob residue catalysts for the transesterification of glycerol with dimethyl carbonate (DMC) to synthesize glycerol carbonate (GC). Among the catalysts, the corncob residue catalyst obtained through calcination of corncob at 500 °C (CCR-500) showed a relatively high basicity and satisfactory catalytic activity. The structural investigation results indicated that CCR-500 was composed of carbon material and some alkaline mineral salts. Using CCR-500 as the catalyst, a glycerol conversion of 98.1% and a GC yield of 94.1% were achieved when the reaction was performed at 80 °C for 90 min, with a catalyst amount of 3 wt% and glycerol to DMC molar ratio of 1:3. The comparison of CCR-500 with the reported catalysts indicated that the CCR-500 was a low-cost, high-active, and easily-accessible catalyst for the transesterification of glycerol with DMC.

In aquatic environment, engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) are present as complex mixtures with other pollutants, such as trace metals, which could result in synergism, additivity or antagonism of their combined effects. Despite the fact that the toxicity and environmental risk of the ENPs have received extensive attention in the recent years, the interactions of ENPs with other pollutants and the consequent effects on aquatic organisms represent an important challenge in (nano)ecotoxicology. The present review provides an overview of the state-of-the-art and critically discusses the existing knowledge on combined effects of mixtures of ENPs and metallic pollutants on aquatic organisms. The specific emphasis is on the adsorption of metallic pollutants on metal-containing ENPs, transformation and bioavailability of ENPs and metallic pollutants in mixtures. Antagonistic, additive and synergistic effects observed in aquatic organisms co-exposed to ENPs and metallic pollutants are discussed in the case of “particle-proof” and “particle-ingestive” organisms. This knowledge is important in developing efficient strategies for sound environmental impact assessment of mixture exposure in complex environments.
