“…21 There are several mechanisms for the corneal endothelial loss after GDD implantation. [22][23][24] Tube-cornea touch, either constant or intermittent, is one of the implicated causes of corneal damage. 4 Intermittent trauma to cornea and loss of endothelial cells may occur with AC tubes during eye rubbing, ocular movement, and blinking.…”

“…2,3 There is only one study published in 1993 providing data on corneal endothelium cell counts after Molteno single-plate implantation based on specular microscopy. 4 The purpose of this study was to further investigate the impact of GDD implantation and more specifically that of the Ahmed glaucoma valve on the corneal endothelium in the light of new anterior segment (AS) imaging techniques as well as to report short-term results with this drainage device in eyes with refractory glaucoma. We used in vivo confocal microscopy for monitoring endothelial cell changes and the Visante optical coherence tomography (OCT), a commercially available AS-OCT for in vivo visualization of the drainage tube.…”

“…4 However, there are limited data published on endothelial cell density. 5 With increasing use of shunts as an alternative to trabeculectomy in lower risk cases, it will be important to identify risk factors for corneal failure in eyes implanted with aqueous shunts.…”
