Correction of Darwin’s Tubercle with Plasma Exeresis

Abstract: Summary: Darwin’s tubercle (DT) is a congenital outer ear deformity characterized by a posterior thickening of the auricular helix. It is particularly common in certain ethnic groups, with reports ranging between 10% and 58% of the specific populations. Despite being common, this vestigial trait is poorly known. It carries no clinical significance, except in the cases where it might be hypertrophic, potentially causing psychological distress and significant social impairment. DT has been traditionally treated … Show more

“…Furthermore, examinations utilizing confocal microscopes reveal the efficacy of spark plasma in rejuvenating collagen structures that have undergone alterations due to aging [ 39 , 40 ]. The utilization of spark discharges is rapidly gaining prominence as a technology for skin rejuvenation and the treatment of various skin conditions, including skin moles, solar lentigo, seborrheic keratosis, active acne, post-acne scars, and even specific abnormalities like Darwin's tubercle [ [41] , [42] , [43] , [44] , [45] ].…”

“…In addition, studies using confocal microscopes show the effect of plasma sparks in restoring the structure of collagens that have changed shape due to aging [32,33]. Spark discharge is rapidly gaining importance as a device that can be used in skin rejuvenation, treatment of skin conditions such as skin moles, solar lentigo, seborrheic keratosis, active acne, post-acne scars, and even some deformities such as Darwin's tubercle [34][35][36][37][38][39].In recent years, new diagnostic techniques have been developed and used to characterize CAPs, among which only a few play a significant role since the information they can provide upfront is essential for a better understanding plasma properties in correlation to future applications.…”
