Corrections to the Mann et. al. (1998) Proxy Data Base and Northern Hemispheric Average Temperature Series

Abstract: The data set of proxies of past climate used in Mann, Bradley and Hughes (1998, "MBH98" hereafter) for the estimation of temperatures from 1400 to 1980 contains collation errors, unjustifiable truncation or extrapolation of source data, obsolete data, geographical location errors, incorrect calculation of principal components and other quality control defects. We detail these errors and defects. We then apply MBH98 methodology to the construction of a Northern Hemisphere average temperature index for the 140… Show more

“…Stephen McIntyre and Ross McKitrick (neither of whom are climate scientists) published a paper in which they claimed to invalidate the hockey stick graph on the grounds that it was supported by bad data (McIntyre and McKitrick 2003). They reached this conclusion by using an incorrect version of the proxy data set used in MBH98 (Rutherford et al 2005(Rutherford et al , p. 2312.…”

“…Some aspects of the hockey stick reconstruction were subsequently questioned, e.g. whether the 20th century was the warmest at a hemispheric average scale (Soon and Baliunas 2003), and whether the reconstruction is reproducible, or verifiable (McIntyre and McKitrick 2003), or might be sensitive to the method used to extract information from tree ring records (McIntyre and McKitrick 2005a,b). Whilst these criticisms have been rejected in subsequent work (e.g.…”

“…3 clearly shows that the warming experienced in the last decades of the 20th century is prominent and it had never been surpassed during the studied time period. The temperature graphs presented by the IPCC (especially the "hockey stick" reconstruction of Mann et al, 1999) have been severely criticized (see for example Soon & Baliunas, 2003;McIntyre & McKitrick, 2003; the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Report, 2006;the Wegman Report, 2006;McIntyre, 2008). It has been independently ascertained that Mann's PC method pr oduces unreal "hockey-stick " shapes .…”
